We reach Chau Doc, vietnam after a half a day of boat trip. Chau Doc is 245km west of Ho Chi Minh City and is very close to the Cambodian border. This town is pretty much not-touristy. We headed to Mountain Sam for sunset which is the highlight for this town. From the top of Mountain Sam, it is said to have a scenic view of the town as well as the rice-fields around. We trek up the Mountain Sam. The walk up was tiring for me and 2.6km seemed never ending (it was more than 2.6km actually). We got up and manage to find some place with really good for scenic views of the rice fields. Disappointly, it was not really very very fantastic. We were thirsty and our water was running out so we decided to get some drinking water from a convenient shop there. To our surprise after getting water from the shop, the shop owner showed us the way into her shop and we found a 'secret' area like a huge balcony with many many hammocks for resting! Oh my oh my! THE VIEW WAS SCENIC, it was the best I think. it was facing the west, which means we can see the sunset. It was at the edge of the mountain and thus, the the overview was just beautiful with the sun shining into some parts of the river, leaving reflection, and rice fields and all. The buying of water was worthy. We never know the shop owner kept such a good place for her own and the place was only meant for their customers only. We lie on the hammocks and waited for the sun to set. The atmosphere was just cool. it's like 'we've found a secret garden'. If we never run out of water, we won't buy water. if we didn't buy water, we won't have such good place to chill. We watched the sun set before we set off back to our guesthouse.
it was another story after the sun set. huge swamps of flying insects appeared almost at every part of the town! i mean, really huge swamps, the insects were attracted to light, so street lamp posts were swamped with insects. i still remembered how 'disgusting' it was to sit on a moto which drive past a swamp of insects, and the driver in front of me had insects on his shirt. i didn't want to see how mine was like! So, the night was actually terrible with so many insects around. Chau Doc, uh huh!
